The Bowflex Selecttech dumbbells come in 2 different weight classes. You can get the Bowflex SelectTech 552’s (5-52.5lbs), or the Bowflex SelectTech 1090’s (10-90lbs). In this review of the selecttech dumbbells I’ll focus more on the bowflex 552’s as they seem to be the more popular choice for the average home gym user.

My Review of the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells

If you don’t already know, the bowflex selecttech dumbbells are adjustable and use an incremental dial in order to select the weight you want to lift at. Unlike standard dumbbells, you don’t have to buy more weight plates and have them scattered all of your floor.

They’re very similar to the Powerblock dumbbells (which are an ugly looking caged design) however, the Bowflex select tech’s are thankfully much nicer to look at, in fact they’re a work of art. Bowflex have thought long and hard not just about the design, but the ergonomics of the dumbbells too, so much so they look and feel like regular dumbbells.

The quality of the these dumbbells shine through as soon as you pick them up, and what really stud out the first time I lifted these babies was the grip. They have the pro-style grip that you’re more inclined to see in the more expensive up-market gyms. It may seem kind of trivial now but if use them often enough you’ll start to appreciate just how much of a difference a good grip makes.

As far as working out with these dumbbells is concerned, I found them really easy to use, switching poundage between sets was simple enough. The only slight issue for me was the fact I had to put them on the floor and kneel down (I’ve been suffering from tendinitis in my knee) to but the bar in place to switch the dials. You can get the optional stand that allows you to change the dials at waist height, but that costs an extra $150 or so. I see no reason why you’d do that though unless you’re looking for something stylish and you’re not bothered about the cost. If you want to save some cash just use an old bedside cabinet or knock up something yourself if you’re a dab hand at DIY.

Overall

The Bowflex 552 and 1090 SelectTech dumbbells are ingenious pieces of equipment. They save space and they’re less of a pain to use than adjustable weight plated dumbbells. If you’re an average gym user then the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells are perfect however, if you’re serious about gaining muscle then you will be better off opting for the slightly more expensive Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells. They’re almost double the weight of the 552’s so it makes sense to upgrade if you can.
